St Johns, Meerut

Old buildings have always been a fascination..its almost as if the doors ,paths wish to tell you about the lively crowds they had seen, the good & bad incidents they have witnessed.
During a recent visit to Meerut, I visited St Johns Church..amongst one of the oldest Churches in British North India spread across its own grounds in Meerut Cantonment. The grounds were overgrown with weeds, paint peeling of the walls, creaking wooden doorways ...but still the structure posed a very imposing view.

Inside the Church were wooden pulpits, magnificient gallery for visitors (its still a functional Church where Sunday Mass is held for Meerut's sparse catholic population ). St Johns must have witnessed much violence during the days of the Sepoy uprising of 1857. It has a very old Bible which regrettably is not preserved much..the pages are almost crumbling & yellowed with age.

The caretaker told me to also visit Sardhana's Church ..another famous British time cathedral near Meerut ( of Begum Samru of Sardhana fame)
